How Resize Image works — the full guide

1What is Resize Image?

Resize images to exact pixel dimensions or by percentage.

Resize Image is part of the Pixly suite of professional image tools. It runs entirely in your browser with no software to install, requires no design experience, and delivers results in seconds — whether you are processing one image or an entire batch. Every operation is applied on the full-quality decoded image, so the output preserves the fidelity of your original file.

2How does Resize Image work?

Resizing uses area-average resampling for downscaling and bicubic interpolation for upscaling. Downscaling averages every destination pixel from all the source pixels it covers, which preserves sharpness and avoids the aliasing (jagged or shimmering edges) naive nearest-neighbor scaling produces. Aspect-ratio protection recomputes the missing dimension from the EXIF-corrected dimensions, so photos never stretch.

The engine works on the decoded full-resolution buffer and applies unsharp masking sized to the scale factor, compensating for the softness that any resampling introduces. EXIF orientation is normalized first, so smartphone photos taken in portrait come out correctly rotated at their new size.

3How to use Resize Image — step by step

Using Resize Image takes less than a minute from upload to download. The tool card at the top of this page is the live editor — everything below explains exactly what happens behind the scenes.

  1. Step 1. Upload images.
  2. Step 2. Enter target dimensions.
  3. Step 3. Resize and download.

4Key features at a glance

  • Custom width and height
  • Maintain aspect ratio
  • Percentage scaling

Each feature is designed to solve a specific, real-world problem — from page-speed optimization for developers to platform-perfect sizes for social media managers. Together they make Resize Image a dependable part of any image workflow.

5Pro tips for the best results

A few professional habits will get noticeably better output from Resize Image:

  • Downscale in one step to the final size — repeated small resizes soften details.
  • For web images, target the display size × 2 (retina) rather than shipping huge originals.
  • Leave height empty to scale by width while keeping the aspect ratio automatically.

6Who uses Resize Image?

Web developers rely on it to keep pages fast — properly prepared images are the single biggest performance win most sites can make. Designers use it for the last mile of production work: format handoffs, corner rounding, frames and exports that match the platform they are shipping to.

E-commerce teams process entire product catalogs to consistent sizes and weights, which measurably improves load speed and conversion. Content creators and social media managers depend on it for daily platform-ready assets, while students and office teams use it to shrink scans and photos so they fit comfortably inside emails, forms and presentations.

7Supported image formats

Resize Image works with all widely used image formats. Each format has strengths that make it the right choice for a particular job:

8Privacy & security

Your images stay yours. Files are transferred over an encrypted connection, processed on secure servers, and automatically deleted within 24 hours — nothing is shared with third parties and nothing is used for training or advertising. Because Pixly works in the browser, you can also process images from any device without installing software or creating an account.

9Frequently asked questions

Why did my photo rotate after resizing?

It did not — the engine baked the camera orientation into the pixels so the image displays correctly everywhere, including apps that ignore EXIF.
